The Rivalry
The battle between the House of Lancaster and the House of York was a long war that lasted from 1455 to 1485. The ruling groups fought over the crown of England. It was called the war of the Roses because the House of Lancaster uses a red rose in their coat of arms, while the House of York uses a white rose in their royal emblem.
1455; The Start of the War
During this time the House of Lancaster is reigning England. Henry VI was crowned king during this time. Henry VI suffered from catatonic schizophrenia. The House of York saw an opportunity to their weak king and attacked. The Battle of St. Albans happened with the House of York gaining victory over the House of Lancaster. Although the House of York didn't get their duke crowned as king they still gave him a rather high position; the "Lord Protector". He had lots of power and technically replaced the king when he's having an episode from his mental illness. Queen Margaret revolted because she was afraid that her son would not be able to inherit the throne. Therefore the Battle of Wakefield started with the Duke of York being slain. That didn't stop the House of York from crowning one of their own a king. Edward IV was crowned as king. He locked up Henry VI in the tower of London and the queen fled to Scotland.
Henry VI Escapes
Henry later escapes through the earl of Warwick. However Henry didn't know that The earl of Warwick was using him to be able to rule England. Henry became king for only a few months before Edward IV declared war against Henry. During a battle in the fog Henry's men killed each other by accident. After a few more battles Henry was defeated and Edward IV was king once again. Henry was then imprisoned in the Tower of London and was executed days later.
Chaos in the House of York
Edward IV had two sons that were supposed to be king next however Edward's brother, Richard, also wanted to be king. During the untimely death of Edward IV, Richard stole the throne from Edward's son. Richard then imprisoned both of his brother's sons where they were starved to death or were murdered. Richard was then proclaimed King of England.
The House of Tudor
Henry Tudor also known as Henry VII was part of the House of Lancaster. He fought against Richard III. During the battle One of Richard's lords switched sides. Henry eventually won with Richard being killed in battle. After that Henry married a princess from the House of York. He married Elizabeth of York, the Daughter of Edward the IV and the sister of the princes that disappeared. Henry did this to bring peace to the two houses. This also started a new ruling group; The House of Tudor. After the war Henry Tudor was crowned the new king of England.
