The Vast Ocean
In ancient times people thought different of the ocean. During these times they thought of boiling waters and man-eating sea monsters that were enough to terrify curios explorers. To top it all off they still thought the earth was flat so they thought they could fall off earth! Why do they need to explore the ocean? Well it's to find a new trade route from the west to the east. For 12 years this people have been trying to go around Africa but the fear of being burned alive in the equator has kept sailors from getting to their destination. Two explorers however were brave enough to sail the mysterious seas.
Bartolomeu Dias and the Cape of Good Hope
Bartolomeu Dias from Portugal was assigned in the 15th expedition. He passed the place where sailors returned back in fear. He didn't see any sea monsters and whirlpools nor did the equator burn them alive. A big storm however tossed them around and they landed on the southern tip of Africa. Dias wanted to keep going but the crew said otherwise. They got scared because of the huge storm that they experienced. So Dias with his crew went back to Portugal. He named the southern tip of Africa Cabo Tormentoso which meant "Cape of Storms", but it was replaced into the Cape of Good Hope to invite more explorers to try voyage around Africa.
Vasco de Gama and his Expedition to Asia
Vasco de Gama was commissioned to be the next to lead the expedition. He sailed around Africa. Instead of sailing near the shore of Africa he sailed far from the coast of Africa by doing so he got so much wind to sail faster. He finally arrived at the Cape of Good Hope and then sailed to India. The Expedition was a success and after trade routes were opened between Europe and Asia.
